I was greeted by a young fellow handing out samples one of which I tasted. I took another just to make sure and could not believe how smooth it is.

I just discovered this website and am comforted in knowing I can order it sent to me in the States. Very smooth tasty dram with a lovely fruity undertone due to the sherry finish.

So I just started drinking Irish Whiskey. The usual suspects of Red Bush and Jamiesons. Saw this Double Barrel on sale, the label was a good read so I really enjoy this fruity whiskey and I'll buy it again.

Let me get one thing out of the way before I state my review: Black Bush is my go-to when I'm at home. I enjoy the direct, unvarnished flavour of this sherry cask whiskey.

When I'm on the road, it's Johnnie Walker Red because I can never find someone stocking BB : slightly smoky, and it fulfils the basic requirements of drinkable whiskey.

Both are well made, slightly complicated, rugged and handsome enough to get by, just like me. So understand that as a bias in my review.

It has some spice to it, that's for sure. Unlike my go-to whiskeys, this has a spicy aroma: vanilla; nuttiness; cinnamon?

Now, don't let that last aromatic aspect put you off. This is good whiskey. Sure, if you're like me and God help you if you are , the first whiff might be a bit of a surprise: where is the smoke?

Where is the peat? Where is the unveiled anger? Why does this even have something to smell at all?

Well, as my wife usually reminds me, I shouldn't expect everything to be the same, day in, day out. I looked at her as she spoke, as I had everyday for the last seventeen years and thought, wise words.

I jest. The same applies to whiskey. I'm halfway through the bottle now, and I'd have to say that I quite like this whiskey. T here are some who feel that the DC32 is the ultimate in Irish whiskey, and should therefore garner a Irish whiskey is in a resurgence.

Sales are increasing year on year, although mostly in foreign markets such as Asia and the US. As such, Irish whiskey is also victim to hype and hyperbolae; many in the community, I fear, are caught up in both.

The simple fact is that much of the Irish whiskey on the market is overpriced, of middling quality or sadly, a combination of both! You may have guessed from the above, then, that I am no cheerleader for the Irish whiskey industry, and nor should I be.

A sacrifice worth making, I reckon. Thank you to Gary Dunlop for doing the leg work to bring this package all the way to the North Coast!

Why the trepidation? The simple answer is that I am going to be honest, and the honesty may not be well-received.

Such is always the deal when bottles or samples find their way to Malt Towers. Firstly, though, I have to give Glendalough some praise.

Kudos straightaway for not trying to hide this fact. Glendalough have started distilling their own Pot Still, and in the course of time, will form an increasingly larger part of the contents until it is all their own.

Now I have been really into Irish whiskey lately so as soon as we got this at the shop I knew I was going to be drinking it later that night.

My first experience with Glendalough was the double barrel which I honestly wasn't really a fan of just too harsh and prickly on the palate but the story alone of how this whiskey was made sold me on it instantly.

This is an entirely different whiskey and not just from double barel but all other Irish whiskey can't think of another one that tastes quite like this.

On the nose I get cinnamon, red apples, musty oak, and that freshly cut wood smell you get when using a powersaw on some boards.

On the palate some tannins but nothing nearly like what you'd find in a bourbon, very oaky with a lot of spices and interesting green wood notes with a nice creamy mouthfeel, maybe a hint of mocha and some maple syrup sweetness in there too but this isn't nearly as sweet as a lot of other Irish stuff I've had lately ,the Irish oak is definitely the star of the show on this one I love the fact it's aged in native oak harvested from forests near the distillery.
